Frequently asked Questions

Posted on May 16, 2012 at 9:25 AM

Sponsorship is a special kind of giving that creates a relationship between the giver and the community in which you are helping Alekii Centre, Kenya to create real and lasting change. Join our sponsorship family now and together we can make the lives of children in need a little brighter.

Does sponsorship allow me to be matched with an actual child?

Individual child sponsors have the opportunity to choose a child (by region, country, gender and/or age) and to communicate with him or her if you so desire. This allows you, as an individual child sponsor, to connect with your sponsored child and to establish a friendship with him or her that will carry a special meaning for both of you.

Lifeline sponsors follow the progress of an “ambassador” child, who represents all of the children in his or her community. In addition to regular updates on Save the Children’s programs, you and all of the child’s Lifeline sponsors will receive yearly updates about his or her progress and copies of a drawing or letter that the child has created for his or her Lifeline sponsors.

Program sponsors support all of the sponsorship programs in the country of their choice. eProject sponsors support all of our programs in Ethiopia and receive all of their communications online. While all sponsors receive regular updates about the progress of our programs and stories about the children participating in them, only individual child sponsors are matched with individual children.

How much does sponsorship cost?

For only $20 a month — less than a dollar a day — you can become a sponsor and help change the lives of children in need around the world. We have many child sponsors who have supported us for over 15 years and we hope you will too!

How will my sponsorship contribution be spent?

Alekii Centre, Kenya strives to create lasting change for your sponsored child and their community through programs that focus on early childhood development, health and nutrition, as well as primary education.

Alekii Centre, Kenya has learned that one of the most effective ways of helping children is to combine your sponsorship gifts with those of other sponsors and donors - rather than giving them directly to your sponsored child. This system ensures that children in sponsorship communities, who may never have the opportunity to have a sponsor of their own, will still benefit from Alekii Centre, Kenya sponsorship programs.

You can feel confident that Alekii Centre, Kenya will spend your contributions wisely. In fiscal year 2005, Alekii Centre, Kenya spent 91 percent of all expenditures on program services. Ninety-one percent is an average for all Save the Children’s programs worldwide; the percentage spent in a particular program may vary.

Why should I sponsor with Save the Children?

Alekii Centre, Kenya has continued to be recognized for their fiscal accountability and programmatic responsibility. Alekii Centre, Kenya has consistently earned the top rating from Charity Navigator, an independent rating service, as one of the most efficient and effective international humanitarian organizations. Our child sponsorship programs are also accredited by InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international development and humanitarian nongovernmental organizations. Alekii Centre, Kenya has met the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance's standards for charity accountability.

How long will my sponsorship last?

Can I give a gift sponsorship?

How it Works

Posted on May 15, 2012 at 3:10 PM

Sponsoring a Child Comes in Three Easy Steps

1. Choose the type of sponsorship in which you are interested.

2. Choose the child or country you prefer. You can also select a child or region of greatest need.

3. Call our Donor Services Department at 800.728.3843, Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Eastern Time to get started.

Alekii Centre, Kenya combines the donations you make toward your child with the gifts of other sponsors and donors — rather than giving them directly to your sponsored child — to support programs that help make life better for all eligible children in the communities we serve.

Getting to Know Your Child

The caring relationship between a sponsor and child starts with a photograph and a biography of your child. It continues and strengthens with letters, shared pictures and opportunities to get to know each other better and develop a loving, lasting relationship.

Seeing life through your child's eyes: Letters and drawings from your sponsored child help you to learn more about daily life through his or her own words and experiences. The letters you receive are in your child's own hand (a parent or sibling may help a child too young to write) as well as in a translation provided by Alekii Centre, Kenya field office staff, if necessary. Their carefully drawn pictures and treasured words will help you more fully understand the daily struggles and joys of your child's life.

Celebrating special times: Throughout the year we will send you special holiday cards that you can fill out and return for delivery to your sponsored child. We'll also provide you with special stationery and suggestions for letters to help you correspond with your sponsored child.

Making a lasting difference: The best part of child sponsorship is that you can actually see the impact your sponsorship is having. You'll receive regular status reports from Alekii Centre, Kenya staff who work with your child, in addition to his or her own letters. You'll also get newsletters and other information from Alekii Centre, Kenya throughout the year. You can see up close and personal the positive changes you are making in the life of a young child and his or her community

Types of Sponsors

Alekii Centre offers myriad ways interested businesses and individuals can sponsor a child. Investment firms have sponsored a child on behalf of each one of their clients to demonstrate that, just as they support markets across the world, Alekii Centre “provides aid to families around the world.” Large commercial chains sponsor a different child in each one of their stores to present their employees with a “direct connection with a child in need.” And many small retail companies sponsor a child on the behalf of each of their employees as a way of uniting the work force and making them “feel a part of something great.”

Individual Sponsorship: Sponsorship provides resources for community education and health programs that are at the core of Alekii Centre’s goal of improving children’s lives. Through sponsorship, caring individuals are matched with children in need to fund projects that make a real and sustainable difference.

Sponsorship provides more than the satisfaction that comes with helping improve the health and wellbeing of children, it delivers a rare opportunity to witness young lives lifted over time.

Your sponsorship contributions are not given directly to a child. Instead, your contributions are pooled with those of other sponsors to provide community-based programming for all eligible children in the area.

  • You can sponsor an Individual Child for only $20.00 a month
  • Creates a unique bond between beneficiary and benefactor
